Bay Phoenix

A new single-family home as tribute to a similar home on the site —by Bay Area modernist Henry Hill — that was lost to fire.

Karl managed the design of this project while at AndersonAnderson Architecture.

The home uses the same basic layout as the original, but updates the space with contemporary finishes inside and out and added an ADU for the out-of-state owner to use on her visits to her childhood home..

creativity ! RESPECT

Respect for the vast history of design and the experience and wisdom of established architects and professional builders vies with the human urge to create something new and special

Karl was working with the owner on a small ADU addition to the home when fire struck it to the ground.

The original drawings survived in the understory and were the basis of this built memorial to the owner’s childhood, her grandfather and the creativity of Henry Hill.

Today it reads as thoroughly contemporary - but the ideas are literally a century old.
